Using David’s experience at Ziklag, Pastor Jenkins challenged parents, grandparents, family members, and the church to recognize the spiritual battle taking place for the next generation. When David returned to Ziklag, he discovered that the Amalekites had taken their sons and daughters captive. In the same way, the world’s values, messages, influences, social media, and pressures can take our children captive if we are not intentional about their development. We cannot surrender our sons and daughters or outsource the responsibility of raising them to schools, churches, or society. We must intentionally develop them spiritually, shape their character, remain engaged in their education, help them discover their God-given purpose, and speak grace and life over them. Even when children have wandered, it is not too late—like David, we can strengthen ourselves in the Lord, pursue what has been taken, and believe God for restoration.
