Join the First Baptist Church of Glenarden Education Ministry Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, for the Virtual College  Planning Symposium! The theme this year is 2020 G.P.S.: Set Your Path to Success. Our goal for this event is to provide parents, guardians and high school students with the knowledge and information needed to pursue and pay for a college education. SPEAKERS

Jessica Brown

Jessica Brown is a nationally recognized financial aid expert. As the founder of College Gurl, president of The College Gurl Foundation, and author of “How to Pay for College When You’re Broke,” Jessica educates students and families on how to make the best-informed decisions around financing a college education.

Named the Financial Aid Fairy Godmother, her mission is to ensure students have access to an affordable and quality education. Additionally, she mentors and exposes Washington, D.C. metropolitan area high school students to college through her non-profit, The College Gurl Foundation.

Jessica speaks all over the U.S. at a host of schools, universities, organizations and news networks and has received numerous awards for her philanthropic efforts. She is a graduate of Howard University, Strayer University and is currently seeking her PhD in higher education administration.

Dr. Andrea Davis, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrea Davis, Ph.D. is a scholar and educator who specializes in matters of equity, inclusion and anti-racism within higher education and organizations. Dr. Davis is the founder and CEO of Scholarly Pursuits LLC, a culturally-proficient educational consultancy. 

Over the years Dr. Davis has worked with hundreds of BIPOC students to help them get into and through college and graduate school. She has also assisted organizations across the United States with diving deep into systemic, institutional, interpersonal and individual levels of racial power, privilege and oppression, and provided hands-on application, practice and reflection to fuel continuous learning and cultural humility. 

Dr. Davis received her bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University and her master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Florida—all fully funded.

She credits Christ and her mother for instilling in her the importance of reaching out to support others and using her skills and abilities to help foster the goals of equity and justice.

Linnita Hosten 

Award-winning author, national speaker and student success strategist, Linnita Hosten coaches students to identify and go after their DREAM career.  

The high-energy edutainer provides content-packed and research-based programming for organizations, universities and community groups, in addition to providing group coaching to students. 

Linnita has been honored with various awards including Excellence in Education; Youth Speaker of the Year; 40 Under 40 in Education; Education Book of the Year; and Alumni of the Year. 

The Towson University alumna is passionate about preparing ambitious students to get clear on their plan and confident about pursuing their DREAM.

Benita Rashaw, Ph.D. 

Dr. Rashaw is a native of Washington, D.C., and a proud graduate of D.C. Public Schools. After graduating from Ballou High School in 1994, she attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where she earned bachelor’s, masters and doctorate degrees. 

Professionally, Dr. Rashaw uses her personal experience as a first-generation college student to connect with those aspiring to attend college with the expectation that it will provide enhanced opportunities for themselves and their families. Currently, she serves as the student affairs operations director at Montgomery College, teaches an online honors leadership class at UMES, and is the co-partner of All Done Empowerment, an educational and mental wellness consulting service. 

Of her many accomplishments, Dr. Rashaw is most proud of being a devoted wife and mother. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the first sorority established for African American women over 112 years ago.

SCHEDULE

Opening Session | 9 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Let’s Get Ready for Your Trip 
This session will help you prepare for the symposium events of the day.

Session 1 Workshops| 9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Where is the Onramp?
This session is designed to help high school freshmen & sophomores explore their purpose. Attendees will be working on a roadmap to achieve their destiny by planning for and building on current experiences. This interactive (students completing roadmap tools during session on their own) session will use tools, such as self-assessment and an initial roadmap to drive toward success.

Crossroads 
This session will assist high school juniors & seniors with clarifying their post-high school roadmap. Attendees will develop a “To Do” list for their planned path (on their own time). This session will focus on understanding their passion and life’s Cross Roads.

Roadside Assistance 
This session will educate parents on the different paths their children may take and discuss how to provide the right level of support for their child’s respective pursuit.

Session 2 Workshops | 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Spillin’ Uber Tea
All students will hear from a panel of peers who represent the journey through college and taking a gap year. The peer group will consist of current college students and recent grads (within 4-5 years).

GPS Signal Lost 
Parents will hear from a panel of fellow parents who represent the journey of having children who pursue college.

Session 3 Workshop | 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Toll Ahead
This session will educate parents and students on the financial aid process, provide options to pay for college and how to complete the FAFSA.

Closing Session | 12:45 p.m. – 1 p.m.

College “GateWAZE” Fair | 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

The virtual college fair will offer students and parents an opportunity to speak directly with colleges and universities, and in some cases obtain on-the-spot college acceptance.
