First Baptist Church of Glenarden Empowers its Members to Become Financially Free through Biblical Teachings and Practical Tools

At First Baptist Church of Glenarden, we are committed to developing dynamic disciples in all facets of life including the area of financial freedom—seven days a week. We employ various teachings from Sunday sermons, courses offered in our Bible Institute, as well as through Prosperity Partners – one of our 104 ministries.

Most recently, Pastor Jenkins’s 7-part series on “Financial Strategies to Survive Tough Times,” provides practical tips and keen biblical instruction for reversing financial ruin and reaping a harvest in the midst of the economic crisis our nation finds itself in. Available in CD ($35) or DVD ($40) sets. For more information, call 301.773.3600.

Bible Institute Courses:
Financial Freedom – Part I teaches sound, biblical principles on money management as God designed and intended that money be managed. Since we began offering the class, we have heard significant personal testimonies. The textbook used, Men’s Manual, Volume II is available for $30. There is great demand to attend the 2-hour, 10-week course offered twice a year.

Among the 20 financial principles taught are:

  • True wealth;
  • Staying out of debt;
  • Developing and maintaining sales resistance;
  • Avoiding swindlers;
  • Getting the best buy;
  • Refusing to lend or co-sign; and
  • Knowing how to pray about financial issues.

Students who have learned the foundational principles taught in Part I are encouraged to follow up with Financial Freedom – Part II. Using textbooks, “ The Complete Financial Guide for Young Couples” ($9) and “ A Family Budgeting Guide Family Financial Workbook”  ($13), both by author Larry Burkett, Part II provides hands-on experience and workshops on budgeting, how to invest, retirement planning, etc.

Registration for the 2009 Bible Institute winter session begins on Sunday, December 7th. Classes will begin January 2009. Please note: Registration is required, however, you don’t have to be a FBCG member to participate. The cost to attend Financial Freedom I and II is $25/student and $20/senior citizen per class. Textbooks are available in our Media Center located on both campuses – The Worship Center (600 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD) and Ministry Center (3600 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD).

Prosperity Partners is a financial mentoring program that pairs men and women who are good financial stewards (Senior Partners) with people experiencing financial challenges (Junior Partners). This intense, 11-month program is helping participants from all economic incomes set realistic financial goals, and more importantly attain them.

The program is led by Michelle Singletary, a nationally syndicated columnist for the award-winning Washington Post column “The Color of Money.” She has written extensively on finances, including her well-received books “Your Money and Your Man: How You and Prince Charming Can Spend Well With the Money You Have” and “Spend Well, Live Rich.” In addition, Ms. Singletary is a regular personal finance contributor for National Public Radio’s program “Day to Day.”

Furthermore, FBCG sponsors an annual symposium on best practice workshops covering virtually every aspect of ministry including finances. Information is forthcoming on the 2009 Church Development Symposium scheduled for March 21st. For more information, please visit us periodically at www.fbcglenarden.org.
